In the mood for a rom-com in a book? Put on your favorite Taylor Swift playlist and piece together the puzzle of Meredith and Wit. I couldn't have asked for a better ending for their story.
Moderate: Death, Car accident, Pregnancy, Alcohol, and Injury/Injury detail

“It's one of those special places where you feel like time doesn't exist. Where it will always be summer, where I'll always wake up with you.”
➽ The Summer of Broken Rules is an emotional story set during a summer at Martha's Vineyard. Meredith just lost her sister recently and going back to their family's vacation home is bringing back a lot of old memories. Everyone is back together for her sister's big wedding and that brings back their tradition of playing Assassin! Meredith's sister loved this game and was always the winner, so now she's hoping to win in honor of her sister. I loved the representation of grief and how conflicting being in a place with so many memories can be. I really felt for Meredith's situation and was happy that she could reconnect with her family. The romance was cute, but ultimately this book didn't stand out to me. In the end, I got a bit tired of the Assassin game (never one of my favorite tropes) and the relationship back and forth.
Graphic: Grief
Minor: Death, Car accident, and Injury/Injury detail

As a major swfitie and romance lover, The Summer of Broken Rules was like a DREAM for me. It felt like a part of my brain (the part that can name any Taylor Swift song after listening to five seconds and who's dream vacation is visiting Jane Austen's house) was sucked out and put into words which was a little weird, but mostly awesome.
Right from the get go, we are introduced to a grieving Meredith, who is struggling to live a happy and normal life after the death of her sister. However while visiting her family's costal town, Meredith becomes a part of a highly competitive game of water assassins, which not only pushes her closer to groomsman Wit, but helps her find the path towards living once again.
The bests parts of The Summer of Broken Rules lies in the dialogue. The banter is top tier, and a fan favorite aspect among readers. Through their conversations, it really became evident of Wit and Meredith's connection, and how helpful he is in her path towards healing.
In the end, this novel was fun, and reminded me how much fun reading can be. I would highly, highly recommend The Summer of Broken Rules.
