What an interesting life she led.

The tagline "A Romance Memoir" is a touch deceiving. It's more akin to a list of people Ms. Vanderbilt has slept with throughout her life. I thought this would have been a great tale of a few relationships and how they formed her into the person she has become with some Hollywood flair in for good measure. What it ended up being is an almost bulleted list of people she had sex with at one point in her life or another with little narrative thread other than her getting older.

It was indeed fascinating to have a glimpse of an upper class socialite's early adulthood life, particularly one as high profile as Gloria Vanderbilt. I had expected a recollection of how her relationships shaped or impacted her, but aside from a few exceptions, most of them felt breezy and like mere vignettes.

Short vignettes of Gloria's various love affairs over the years. (Roald Dahl!?!) Very breezy and conversational.

Rest in peace, Gloria. I'm glad you had fun while you were here.

An odd, little book. A "romantic memoir". Reads like listening to someone talking into a recording machine. Very much a romantic view of the lives of the extremely wealthy. Voyeuristic, yet odd somehow in its narrowness, its undeveloped stories. Why did she write this? Then there's a touching section about the deaths of a son, a husband. Almost has depth but not enough. There's a certain thinness in the material.

This is a bittersweet little book from the legendary Gloria Vanderbilt.  It gives a peek into some of her Hollywood romances as well as less healthy ones she entertained, especially after her son died.  I appreciate her love of romance, passion, and love that she explores in this very personal book.
