At risk of sounding like a broken record I will say again that i really do not like short stories. (I keep reading them only because there are so many collections of them that have been labeled as classics or at least are included in Barnes and Nobles' classics collection.) In the author's favor, no matter the length of the individual story, it is satisfyingly self-contained. That is not to say that the content of each story is satisfying or pleasing. Once again I must mention how depressing most of them are. By the end of the collection it becomes clear that de Maipassant has particular favorite plot types which make the stories repetitive and boring.
I recommend this book only to those interested in the classics.
