Dark Water Daughter was a pleasant entry into pirate fantasy. The plot here was really engaging and quick-paced, the world was well-constructed, and all the characters were dynamic and unique. The magic system is concise and just "undiscovered" enough for there to be a compelling element of mystery for it to be really interesting. I felt like the ending of this book concluded very tidily: Long leaves threads open to continue the story, but I liked that there wasn’t a glaring overhang of things that needed to be addressed in a second installment.

Dear Dark Water Daughter,

Wow, absolutely a well written pirate fantasy. The magic system was interesting- though unnecessarily convoluted in its delivery. The first half was a trudge  and I wasn’t sure about this book until about 60%. The ending was 10/10.

I really wish there was a ship and crew list. I literally got characters completely confused the first 20% of the book.
The foreshadowing was great and each question that would pop in my head was answered in due time.

I was smitten with the secondary characters- Demery, Grant, Fisher. They were funny and complex. I prefer them to Mary and Samual. Though Mary had quite an epic moment in the end.

The writing style was lyrical and added to the atmosphere. This book had plenty of that.

I’ll read Book 2.
