Sometimes moving can give you a clean start and other times it makes you face the ghost you are trying to run away from. White smoke is a visceral thriller that will have readers questioning if there are ghosts in their homes. This book is a mash-up of paranormal activity and Get Out, giving readers a satisfying thriller. To say Marigold is flawed would be an understatement, but through all the flaws she is authentic and relatable. She is portrayed as a real teenager and does not skirt away from heavy topics. Nor does it try to paint the teens in a fake light, they are who they are. The thriller aspect is felt on every page and keeps the reader wanting more. The only flaw is the abrupt ending which may leave the reader unsettled.

A very interesting story. Mari moves with her mom, brother, step-sister and step-father away from California to a small Midwestern town called Cedarville. Will this be a new start for her? Her mom accepted a job that includes a free newly renovated house on Maple street, the first house on the block to be renovated.
Strange things start happening and Mari’s annoying little stepsister, Piper says her “imaginary friend” does not want her in the house and she has to leave.
I don’t want to give anything away so I will leave it at that. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it!!

Not my favorite of TDJ books, though I can’t quite put my finger on why. It brought the “new family moves into an old haunted house” trope and butted it up against a racist undercurrent and power struggle, which was well done. Idk if I just didn’t find the stuff scary? Or it maybe felt a bit too campy?
But yeah. I believe I’ve now read like every TDJ book, & shall continue to!
