The ending was not as fulfilling as I would’ve hoped, but it is very interesting and mysterious sprinkled with some hopeless romance

The book isn't very interesting. It is pretty boring throughout the book but has a GREAT ending. The book isn't that scary and would not recommend for people who like really scary and suspenseful books.

Never judge a book by its cover they said.
They were right.
To me, I thought this looked scary. But this was essentially written like a wannabe middle grade horror book. The scary parts were sort of creepy but were too cut through with cringey unrealistic conversations and behaviours from the characters.
The conclusion, which is what I hung in for, was disappointing & did not clear up a few things.

The most frustrating thing with a mystery is when the author adds things in just for effect without actually solving it at the end.

Some photos were creepy, others were half-obviously staged/not adding anything. Not worth getting for this factor.

(2⭐️) Damn this was boring and confusing. And nothing about it was scary or even creepy. I literally felt nothing while reading this book (besides me making fun of it lol)

The characters: bland. Extremely bland they don’t have any personality and the “romance” was unnecessary. They just don’t feel like… people? Idk they are just so boring and forgettable. I already forgot their names

The writing: dry. things aren’t even well described and majority of the book is “creepy” black and white images but no detail. I still don’t understand many things in this book because it was just confusing. This is childrens horror not young adult

I wanted to put this at 4 stars, but I feel like I just couldn't. I loved that it was set in NH, because it's my home and things rarely are set there. I loved the interesting characters, also. I really love the idea of a story set in an old asylum too. The problem was I had 50 questions when I started this book and at the end I had 50 new questions and no god dang answers. I'm sure reading the second book would clear up some of those questions, but I just wish I didn't close a book feeling confused and unsatisfied.

had to immediately buy the rest of the series after finishing this.... well, my mama bought it for me, anyways.

srsly, these are the books i've been waiting for my entire life. HAUNTED. ASYLUM. my best dreams are made of this stuff.

this is a really easy YA read but there are some twists and turns that occasionally made me slam down the book and go "WUT?!?!"
