I've been trying to read genres other than fantasy in 2013 (since that's basically 95% of all books I've read in my life). So I've been digging up the best-of lists for sci-fi, mystery, thrillers, and romances, etc. This was on a list of "one of the best romances of all time." So I was like, eh, why not. It should be fun?

nope

Conclusion: sometimes I think it's ok to avoid whole genres since they don't suit you personally, like the way I avoid nonfiction books about cars and will now be avoiding romance.

This book is one of the most famous titles in historical romance and rightly so. It’s my first medieval romance and it did deliver medieval. ⚔️ Knights!

Not really my cup of tea - too much beating and a really wretched start. There are a couple of steamy scenes, but I just couldn't get into the characters' romance. And I also hoped the heroine would die when she
Spoilerkilled a beautiful and brave horse because of her stupidity...

I always pick these medieval romances up with a bit of trepidation because they can often contain events that I don't ever enjoy reading - violence against women, affairs, men in love with their mistresses but settling for the heroine. Naturally some of these events are just reflective of the Medieval Period, because it was as fashionable then to beat your women and have a string of illegitimate children as it is for men to have man-buns now.
At first 'Wolf' was too ready to use his hands against Jennifer, and I was all, 'This dude isn't okay...' but I kind of forgave him because it became clear that violence was an instinct, but one that he was able to control. Most of the time He did try and control Jennifer with banter and non-physical punishment for the majority.

I loved the whole plot. The English versus the Scottish! Familial revenge! Loyalties split! Chemistry in spades! I didn't rate it as a five-star review because I felt that there were a few too many 'mistakes' and 'miscommunication' and not enough development of a trust. There was physical longing and enjoyment but I wanted to see/feel more of an emotional connection earlier on. Essentially they were so easy to break apart because they never trusted each other and were always waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Great book and I would absolutely recommend.

AMAZING!!!!!!!! A must read for historical romance readers. While reading this book I felt all the emotions the characters were feeling; I could see myself in the book! This may be a touch dramatic but, I can't imagine what my life would be like if I hadn't read this book. Also this book has one of the best endings I've ever read!

Since I’m a sucker for stories involving enemies-turned-lovers, I enjoyed the battle of wills between Jenny and Royce, especially their banter. The dialogue was one of the highlights of the book for me. There were some steamy scenes too that were superbly written, unlike many romance books where I feel like the love scenes are completely over the top and embellished.

That said, the story dragged a lot in certain areas and felt formulaic. The first half of the book was more compelling than the second part. Both the hero and the heroine felt cliché to me, the character development was lacking, and it was your typical happily ever after ending. Not for me, but if you love traditional romances, it checks all the boxes.
