Maybe my expectations were a little too high?
The book was good, but it could have been so much better. Halfway through, I started not caring for the main character. His childish outbursts were so sudden and surprising. This is written in first person, I felt none of what he felt and no reasoning from him that would let me be on his side.
And the book is called the Mariposa Club, a very clever name. But the club never happened...that I could tell. They got the go-ahead to have it, Lib made tons of TV interviews (WTF??) and other stuff promoting the club, but nothing ever seemed to come of it. By halfway through the books, the author seemed to lose direction.
The secondary characters were very entertaining. Like Maddie. After her first appearance, I was looking forward to her showing up again. Though when she finally did, it was very briefly and left me unsatisfied. And Tony...His involvement with the 'action' part of the book seemed rushed, added as a last minute plot device to make the ending work. I would have loved to see more of his struggle.
And at the end, when someone died...I had no idea who it was when Maui looked under the sheet. He is telling the freaking story and it took me a few paragraphs later to realize what had really happened.
The info on the back of the book was way more dramatic than the actual book. I kept waiting for something to happen bad to the characters. Then I stopped caring any more.
