Unreadable sentences. It's not because of jargon either. Butler just writes like an academic.

If you're new to philosophical academic writing, run. Run away as fast as you can and come back when you're seasoned. Seriously, it's not made clear enough just how academic this is! Very tough read and almost a DNF, but I decided it was worth it for the gist of it. I did have to accept that I wouldn't be able to understand most paragraphs though. Maybe I'll come back to it when/if I get more into philosophy.

I really like her ideas, and I can see why she has been so influential, but this book was a pain to read.
