It's supposed to be a mystery/thriller type of book, yet in reality it's a humorous depiction of a small Irish village in the 50s. There is barely any plot, just lots of ramblings of all the villagers. I did enjoy my time in Gohen though.

I kept waiting for a payoff that never really came.

Very hard going.partly that is the lack of any awareness the reader may not know some of the words in the book or what they mean....Sodality for example, partly because the plot - such as it is - does not actually make much sense or have any real purpose - partly because the shifting narrative positions are just downright confusing - partly because some of the material has no relevance to what the narrator would have seen or known (whichever of the many narrators is featured at the time). I have a sense of an almost poetic ability to describe and put you vividly in the moment - the trouble is the vehicle chosen doesn’t work.
