SPOILERS FOR THIS FANTASTIC NOVEL AHEAD!!

when i first picked up this book, i thought the cover was overkill. too dramatic. giggled a bit to myself.

and then i was so scared i got up in the middle of the night to double check if the doors to my house were locked and then locked my bedroom door when i went back to my room, pulled down all the blinds, and just generally felt as though somebody was gonna whip out from behind the shadows and put a knife through my throat.

ANYWAY! WOOOOO FOR GORY MURDER MYSTERY HORRORS SET IN SMALL TOWNS WITH MULTIPLE POVS!! hard drugs in book form. this was the EXACT kind of shit i needed to rebound after trying my luck at a rom-com and failing miserably. i don't want to read assholes fall in love, I WANT TO READ ASSHOLES GET MURDERED AND TEENAGERS SOLVE THE CASE. maybe that says more about me then it does about rom-coms...

this story follows our three main protags, amber, a plus sized lesbian queen with complex emotions towards her family, cecily, a beauty guru who wants to shed her plastic appearance and study the science behind makeup, and rudy, a stereotypical jock hot boy with hot takes on his mothers management system. btw, i love all of them with my whole heart cole triplets you are the best people ever i hope you know that!!

basically, the triplets are social media stars with a mom for a manager and a gambling addict dad who has forced them into a life of home renovation in order to barely get by. the family ends up only being able to afford a very creepy, very run down mansion out in a small little town. MYSTERY AND DRAMA ENSUE!

i don't like plot recaps so i'll just tell you everything i really liked about the whole book in bullet points.
- amber and cecily's relationship and how it's flipped when cecily gets half her face taken out with acid. honestly i loved how amber geniunely doesn't become the best person after?? like both of them are floundering for attention and hurt each other's feelings in the process of trying to reach a million followers and so amber's hurt when cecily gets to be pretty for the camera and she has to be the camerawomen, and then cecily's hurt when amber gets to take all her beauty sponsorships
- rudy's investigation scenes were so mf good i was sat straight up in my bed while the tension built up very fun experience
- the fact that you kinda know that the red herrings are red herrings and then the twist reveal is more fun because of it!! even if you guessed the twist it doesn't take away from the overall threatening demeanor of the villain and i really liked that. also reena being the killer who literally threw alex grable off her own window and living in the attic was really scary because i have a creepy attic right next to my bedroom! didn't help me go to bed after i finished this book!!! haha... haha... dark shadows...

i don't usually do content warnings for books, but i feel that this one really needs them. i didn't want to put them all in graphic, but most of the things i tagged are explicitly described in the story and come up repeatedly as plotlines. if you don't think you can handle them, please don't read this!! i'm an avid horror/thriller consumer and this book still made my stomach squirm a lot.
