I love Joann Saul’s books. They are creepy to say the least. By page 270ish you figure out what is going on and by 300s you are certain. And in Sauls fashion there is a twist.

Not as well done as most of his other novels, at all.
Very little was left to the imagination. Very little suspense and mystery. eerie in its own right but overall not impressed.
as a long time fan of Saul, this is the only book to have let me down so far.

John Saul is geboren in 1942 in Pasadena, Californië.
Suffer the Children was geboren.

When I first picked this book up, I was worried that it was going to be homophobic/racist/misogynistic, as so many mass market horror novels of the mid-nineties tended to be.  Instead, I was pleasantly surprised. In fact, john Saul seemed to go out of his way to show he wasn't homophobic, even if his efforts at it were clumsy at times.

As for the novel itself, it was fine. It was certainly entertaining, and I enjoyed reading it, for the most part. The prose is nothing special, and is, in fact, sometimes clunky, and occasionally throws in the odd $100-word, even when doing so completely disrupts the flow of the text and it has no right, contextually, to be there. The book had a habit of switching perspectives suddenly and, occasionally, confusingly. And there wasn't a single 'twist' in the story that I didn't see coming from a mile away.

But I had fun, and I think that's all that really matters in a book like this.

I really enjoyed this book right up to the end and then found the ending very disappointing. I almost downgraded it to a three because of the ending. I found the premise to be pretty good but not original (serial killer executed at the same time a man dies and is revived from a heart attack.) There is lots of action and graphic description to please the not so faint of heart.

Saul continues to be a wonderful author, expertly placed horror and mystery to immediately suck a reader into his story telling. Saul has a very vivid and scenic way of writing, laying out everything for you in such a truly wonderful way that makes it a pleasure to read. Expertly written tense scenes leave the reader practically breathless as they read, holding their breath to see how things turn out.
So much great mystery happening on multiple fronts that I find myself extremely curious to uncover them. The horror is well placed and leaves the reader feeling quite shocked.
You get a sense of doubt about a man supposedly guilty about a crime and the story leaves you puzzled as to if he was in fact innocent as he claimed to be and that something much stranger is taking place.
