This series jumps from story to story, each with new characters and timelines, often new settings and a hanging thread connecting to the previous and next. Some of these characters and micro-plots are quite rousing, full of intrigue and adventure; however, others drag, or complicate matters without explaining why, and it changes the whole tone and pace of the books.
In this one, I enjoyed seeing Arcadia as a main character, a clever teen with mischief and anxiety on her mind in equal measure. I would appreciate the characters and their development much more were Asimov to include more women , grant them agency and respect, and not use them as pawns in his cheeky twists.
This book was a fun wild goose chase with a good conclusion, wherein we learn more about the Mule’s effect on the Foundation and the future, and reconsider the existence and intentions of a possible Second Foundation. A lot starts here that it will be interesting to return to, and see play out.
