So many twists and turns. Every time it seems as if Gwen has her life figured out, another problem arises. The thing I love the most about this series is how the characters always make me feel something. Matvei, the son of Gwen’s master Timofei, was not a likeable character at all though I admire the way that Gwen stood up to him. Timofei proved to be an unlikeable character as well since he turned a blind eye to all of Gwen’s struggles. In the end, I was rooting for Gwen’s kids, Kyna and Brac, and I’m eager to see where the next leg of Gwen’s journey takes her.

Wow. The intensity of Gwen's life certainly ha heated up in this book. She's had twenty years of peace, but the lies and illusions of her life are beginning to show the evil that lies behind the promises made to her. She tries so hard to find love and acceptance, giving all she has to make life better for everyone else, and it all smacks her in the face, leaving her feeling alone again. Only now she has her grown children to worry about, and they seem to be on opposite ends of the struggle between vampires and humanity. You never know where this story is going to take you, or how (or if) Gwen will survive this round of abuse. This was great. I think this is my favorite episode in the saga so far. Lots of action, plenty of tense moments, and never-ending suspense will keep you reading to the last page.
