This book is definitely a guilty pleasure for me. I enjoy reading it but it is ultimately so deeply problematic that it’s hard to stay in the story. Aside from Meyer’s regular racism involving the Quileutes (quite literally insinuating that POC are animals) and her drastic white-washing of every single vampire character, there were other problems. The way Meyer handles Bella’s pregnancy carries deeply anti-abortion sentiments—with the people trying to prioritize Bella’s life being framed as the antagonists. Additionally, solving the love triangle by making Jacob fall in love with a child?? I know that Meyer tries to pretend like it’s not like that but it’s truly insane in my opinion. And with jacob’s perspective we get a healthy dose of misogyny and just a sprinkle of homophobia, so that’s unfortunate.
