I was so happy when I finished this book, because now I can finally say: yes, I have read Steven King! It wasn't quite what I was expecting (not as spooky), but it pulled me in and entertained me nonetheless.
I have to say I was expecting a more prominent paranormal element to the story. The creep factor doesn't actually reveal itself and play a meaningful role in the story until halfway through the book. And while I did enjoy reading about the cryptic painting, I felt it wasn't really necessary to the storyline. The conflict between Rose and her (completely psychotic) husband Norman, could have easily carried the story. The paranormal aspect of this book just felt really shoehorned in.
I thought Rose was a fantastic character. I love heroines who start off meek, but through trial and tribulation, grows into a more secure, confident individual who feels comfortable in their own skin. Norman (Rosie's husband) was a good (certifiable, bloodthirsty 200 pound looney toon) character in his own right, whose glimpses we see of into the past help explain (not excuse) why he is the way he is. The romance was also absolutely, butterflies-in-your-tummy adorable I have to say.
I've been told if you prefer a more preternatural, spine-chilling story, to check out "It," so that'll be next on my Steven King list!
