Oh my god why did this have to be the first solo Black Widow I ever read?! Men are dumb.

So I’ve read marvel comics before, and I’ve read some of Nat’s comics before, but I’ve never kept track of the ones I’ve read. I’ve now made it my mission to read every marvel comic that includes winterwidow (or almost every marvel comic bc they might be in little snippets of long runs n stuff. Just the mainstream black widow, winter soldier, captain america & avengers stuff basically lol) bc I adore them and I want to read their full story through the comics. So I’m starting here and working my way up.

I don’t remember ever reading this comic run, and this first issue was a little lackluster and albeit confusing. The pacing was weird, and I wasn’t a huge fan of the art style, especially Bucky’s character design. However, I’m really intrigued to read more about Natasha’s entry into the red room (which is one of my favorite parts about Natasha both in the mcu and in the 616 comic runs that I’ve read), and Wolverine was an interesting addition to this?? I definitely wasn’t expecting that, and now I’m even more intrigued to pick up some X-Men stuff bc the X-Men are awesome. Anyway, pretty mediocre, but regardless, I’m still gonna finish this run.

I loved all of the flashbacks into Black Widow's past, experiences, other characters, all the drama she was subjected to. I loved how the drawing style of Black Widow changed with each flashback.

It's good to see more back story. But this book was an absolute mess. It covered too much ground and didn't concentrate on telling a compelling sensical story. It was also a mixture of reprint/retelling and a through story which was jarring. I would have rather seen a lengthier story spending more time on the bits and less on the flashing back and forth.

Enjoyed this, wondering if much of this is in the upcoming movie.
Surprisingly well done history of the Widow that helps explain how she has remained in comics for so long without aging.

I'll admit, I got a little too excited seeing the white suit when reading this lol. I enjoyed a lot of it but also still had a few things that could have been better. I liked the twist on Ivan being the villain, but I didn't care for his reasoning was that Natasha never gave him the time of day (like, he could practically be her dad). I liked the concept of 'icepick,' but wasn't fond of the antidote being in kiss form for only Bobbi and the rest as touch form when it came to the men. As much as I think it would have been silly for Natasha to have to kiss everyone to provide them with the antidote (purely because she's an assassin and pretty serious personality-wise), it could have brought the comical aspect as opposed to 'let's make the women in Hawkeye's life make out to fulfill the sexy quota.' I also didn't mind the different art styles for past and present, kinda just wanted them to be a little bit more similar in style.
