it is an act of bravery to live through hell and run from it when we have been made to believe that running is far more dangerous than staying
What I really appreciate about this book is that it talks about trauma at length without feeling gratuitous. I love Sahaara and Kiran’s relationship. They love and support each other through everything. Even though they have their spats, they’re still their for each other at the end of the day.
Spoiler
I will say, I kinda hoped that Jeevan and Shaara would just stay friends, but I don’t hate where they landed. I like how they were open with each other and understanding of where they were individually.Graphic: Sexual violence, Misogyny, and Rape
Moderate: Domestic abuse, Xenophobia, Emotional abuse, Physical abuse, Police brutality, and Pregnancy
Minor: Violence

This was a hard book - not to finish but to start and accept it as a realistic fiction since it covers so many realistic triggers and sometimes with so much emotion that it felt honest and real.
Right from the beginning Kaur tells you that this could be triggering by providing a page listing for the reader at the beginning. That set up the book in a way that others with a similar topic haven't - The warning made me conscious that I was choosing to move forward and read this and I did and I found that after I got past the slow build up, it was an intense story of survival, endurance, heartbreak, love and family told through a combination of prose, poetry and art.
It's a powerful story of a mother and daughter, alternating between their viewpoints to highlight their dynamic and the world around them as it weaves between a mother's past and her daughters present to tell their story.

This audiobook was incredible. I cannot describe the anger I feel for these characters and how badly I just want to scream from the rooftops that they speak the truth.
