“We learn from failure, not from success!”

I listened to this book because I knew from the beginning that I wouldn’t want to spend time sitting and reading this since I’ve realized classic aren’t really my thing. It was boring but at the same time it was really good, or better than I had expected. I really enjoyed the beginning but after it was just a bit repetitive and we barely got to see Dracula any more. I thought this would be about our OG vampire.

I was barely able to muscle my way through this book. I understand it’s a classic for the way it was written at that time, but wow, soooo repetitive. I found the multiple POV a little confusing at times and somewhat unnecessary, as several of the POVs discussed the same telling of events.

I never give up on a book once I’ve started, but this, this came pretty close.

Sooo it’s Dracula. It’s about a vampire. A really old vampire. He preys on [mainly] young women and drinks their blood. Everyone knows what this is about and I’m honestly shocked at myself for waiting until now to read this!

I enjoyed reading this but there were a few things I very much did not like. It tended to ramble on [Van Helsing is an annoyance] and the treatment of women isn’t great [not surprized at that for obvious reasons].

I really loved reading where all the different vampire folklore originated from and I really liked the format. Always like a wee diary entry/letter read.

I think everyone should pick this up because it’s a classic and it’s cool seeing where modern day vampire books get inspo from but it wasn’t my fav spooky read.

3 stars.

I loved Dracula. The Gothic atmosphere shines through from the first page and even though the myth is known among everyone, I was unaware of the entire plot of the novel. The popular classic started to lead its own life due to the great amount of adaptations. I never saw any of the adaptations before I read the novel, but I was aware of the myth surrounding Count Dracula and vampires. Therefore, I was really looking forward to this novel. The novel did not let me down, I loved the gloomy atmosphere and the Gothic genre is one of my absolute favorite genres.

The narration suprised me, I did not know that the original plot was told in letters, diaries and telegrams. This made the story interesting, especially since the reader is aware of the myth and knows what can happen, but the characters are unaware of the great dangers. Especially when the group leaves Mina behind every night to hunt Count Dracula, she is completely alone in the lunatic asylum, which is not a good prospect for the young woman. I already suspected that she would be the next prey of the vampire, which she will become eventually. But the ignorance of the real dangers makes the characters' stories more interesting to read, you wonder when Jonathan will find out he is living in the castle of a vampire.
Overall, I would most certainly recommend anyone to read this all-time classic.
