Great, brief history of typeface development at the beginning of the book. Learned some interesting tidbits too. An "incunable" refers to material printed before 1501 in Europe. The letters "T A g e r t a" have many differences of letterform concentrated in them.

Surprisingly dated book, though. Written in 1983--typographic methods have changed a lot since then. Especially in terms of the mechanics of printing. There's a ton of now-mostly-useless advice about how to format, mark up, and set copy. I skimmed most of that. Some advice seemed dated stylistically.

The body copy was printed in a handlettered form that was not easy to read for any length of time. Some bits of advice, like "don't forget to write the job number, your name, and company on every page of manuscript," seemed to assume that the reader wasn't very intelligent. Only two stars for this one.
