Listened to this on Audible. Performance was on point, but annoying for it. Think I might’ve enjoyed this better reading it.

I do very much see why people love this book and why it speaks to so many. Frankenstein's creation is a sympathetic character... up to the point of him murdering a child. I think if I had read this when I was younger I would have resonated more with the emotional plight of the two main characters. Because yeah, being put on this world when you didn't ask for it only to be cast out and unwanted at every turn would make you super bitter. And Frankenstein is a dick for abandoning what he's done and LITERALLY running from the consequences of his actions but also he's being haunted at every turn. At my big age though, I just feel so bad for Elizabeth. This woman was adopted to one day be the wife of her adopted brother and never questions this. In fact when her life falls apart around her all Frankenstein can say is "we should still get married and also I have a terrible secret to reveal to you the day after our wedding". At every turn this poor woman deserved better.

A lot of the rating is coming from the prose. Shelley is very clearly a gifted writer and it's no wonder this book is a classic. Despite the issues I took with it while reading, there was no denying that this was a person who truly understood the complexities and moral dilemmas her characters were facing.

All in all I'm glad I read it just so I know can say something more in depth than "Frankenstein is actually the name of the guy who made the monster". Now I can say, "fucking hell what a terrible raw deal Elizabeth got, right?"

pretty mild but definitely engrossing story. all the horror was definitely just gore, and even some of the gore was pretty predictable, but that’s what happens when a book becomes a classic. no strong opinions good or bad, but definitely got me ready for a depressing winter.
