Although a tragic story, it focused on survival and wasn’t a ‘poor me’ book.  Left me wanting to know more, looking forward to a sequel!

I would have given it fewer stars, but its not memoirs' fault that I don't like (non-funny) memoirs.

It was a memoir that kept me turning that pages. I was amazed that the author could write and make me think like a child. I hated that it just ended without any questions answered - but I guess that's why she's writing a sequel!

I really was drawn to this memoir. In the beginning, it took me a while to get into it, but when I did, I didn't want to stop. Jenny was real to me. I saw a real girl. Sometimes memoirs have this fictional way to characterize the people. Jenny evolved, and you knew why and saw it. You also saw her brother evolve too. I'm looking forward to her follow-up memoir.

My mom happened to pick this book up at a library sale, she read it and then passed it on to me. She is still not sure what made her buy it, but we both really liked it. One of things I liked most was the unique style of story telling - told from the point of view of the author as a little girl. I wanted to keep reading, but at the same time didn't want the book to end. Luckily there is a sequel that I will be reading soon!

one of the saddest books I've ever read. heartbreaking to yet again hear about children trying to grow up under these circumstances.

Loved this book. Heart wrenching memoir. Amazed at the authors resilience and capacity of capturing the essence of the era.
