But the worst thing about living now lies not in not sensing, but in finding that my senses are still just as alive, still flared to the tiniest details of life, the whoosh of water washing away grime and vomit, the sibilant noice of brooms slapping cement, the hope and faith of birds who were once the bearers of our flame, but not being able anymore to be surprised by Joy.

I dont know how to review this book aside from this is intensely deep. Its so deep that some of the stories went right over my head. I dont get it at all. However, when i do get it, its heart wrenching and oozes with cynicism and social message. Laksmi Pamuntjak is a bilingual author and has written many novels both in English and Indonesian language. Hence, nothing will get lost in translation as to how she wrote this book, both the art descriptions and fables is so beautiful. She wrote in a manner whereby you just want to stop and ponder the meaning of life (with the thinker pose) nearby the beach. I love Art and I would consider myself as someone who are interested in Art which is exactly the reason i am bought the book in the first place. Maybe i was not meant to understand some of the stories she wrote because this is her interpretation of all the painting she saw , how she drew the connection from it by creating characters and made them alive in the plot. That being said, i still want to check out her other books. Judging on how many writer awards and recognition she has received, maybe i pick the wrong book to start with.
