Even though reading this in 2023, 20 years after this edition was published, I can't say much has changed in US policy. Only that with China on the economic and particularly militaristic rise, the US will only step up efforts to retain its hegemony. I can't see a good ending to this. As Bertrand Russel is quoted in the book, we need to wake up from this nightmare.

Chomsky’s message is good, but he’s really hard to read. This book is dense and almost feels like a laundry list of America’s crimes in the past 50 years.

If you already know about them, you can probably skip this book. I’d recommend it if you want to share it with older people who are overly pro-USA. I feel like my parents would like it, idk.

Guys America is bad??? Did you know this? Why did no one tell me?????

Chomsky does a fantastic job of laying out the horrid crimes this state has done over the past 100+ years and the atrocities we have funded/supported. Even further he expertly lays out the “double veto” the US executes where we lie and overwrite history/public opinion to support our shabby moral superiority.

Chomskys a king! A cutie! Make me feel like shit old man!

Very clearly a seminal piece of literature when it comes to formalizing the US as something other than a force for good and freedom. So much of the attitudes towards the US are justified in this book, and Chomsky does a great job relating foreign interference, hypocrisy, and use of soft power to a larger US grand narrative.

A detailed, accurate telling of the crimes of the US imperialist government, particularly around the time of the Gulf war and the Iraq war. If you want accurate accounts of things the US/ major media outlets may have lied to you about, this is a good place to start.

Definitely minding the importance of being an intellectual in this day and age, Chomsky presents an ever-necessary and ever valid critique of American, and subsequently historical, imperialism. Capitalism can only subsist on a permanent oppression and control of those under privileged classes which built the palaces rulers live in, and the author is well aware of it. Though he apparently at times does sin in believing in some sort of American exceptionalism of sorts, nevertheless he hits the mark every time with poignant comments and well based arguments presenting the dangers the US of A pose to the entire world.
