update:
Listen. When I first finished this book, I thought yeah this a 4/5. I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did and somehow I ended up loving it? Then a few weeks passed and I found myself thinking about it all the time. Going back to it constantly. I realized I was irrationally obsessed. I say irrationally because is it the best writing/plot/characters? No. But Rooney found a way to carve herself right into my little heart.

original:
Sally Rooney is incredibly skilled. Her writing is extremely intimate, almost to the point of discomfort. Her observations on the mundane daily life of her characters, their gestures, and the environment surrounding them is profound. She always leaves me craving more and I finish each of her novels disturbed yet seeing the world around me in a vastly different perspective.

As with any Sally Rooney book, the main characters feel real and the stories surrounding them seem plausible. I enjoyed the ever changing dynamics and relationships between each of the main characters. The ending felt complete while not being final. It masterfully captures the complicated nature of relationships, speaks to love and how love manifests, and what contemporary dating can be like.

I feel like I didn’t process this book well enough to write a proper review. I did find that I related to Frances in that I also struggle with identity/personality and wanting  to be liked/seem interesting.
However, she seems to create like 99% of the conflict in the book by being withholding for no apparent reason, so. I don’t know if that’s supposed to be the point? Like she doesn’t reveal anything about herself as a means of seeming more interesting, but ultimately hurts the people who are already interested in her by doing so? Also for a book called conversations with friends she seems spend a lot of time avoiding conversations… with her friends.
I will say I had to google a chapter by chapter synopsis of everything that happened because I found it all blended together by the end.
