i’m obsessed with the bluntness and tenderness of this woman!! everything angelou writes is gold - like having a conversation with your favorite aunt.
also, of course i couldn’t end the year without another tale of daughters and their mothers. after reading much about the fraught, brittleness of these sorts of relationships, the story of the love between maya and her mother absolutely warmed my heart

This book was a surprise, mostly as to how little I truly knew about Maya Angelou. I listened to the audiobook which made the stories of her mother all the more special.

Always be yourself, unless you have a chance to be Maya Angelou's mother, Vivian Baxter. Be Vivian Baxter if you can. She was amazing. She was as deeply kind, observant, and intelligent as her famous daughter.
All I want for Hanukkah, Christmas, and Hogmanay is a movie version of this. And it has to include with Matisse scene, which is priceless.

Perfectly worded and touching, this one feels like Maya through and through. Ended too soon and left me in a bit of an emotional mess wondering whether or not it would be weird to text my mom just to say I love her.
