I enjoyed every second of this book! I came for the poly vampire romance and stayed for the vampire biology 🧫🧬 It’s like it was written for me.
My favorite aspect of this book were the characters. Every single character was fleshed out and had compelling back stories and motivations.
It’s an extremely easy read and super face paced. I’m sad I’ll have to wait for April to read the sequel.

An Adult Fantasy that follows Remy, a vampire hunting noble rumored to be a dhampir, who has to join forces with two of the leaders of the vampire courts to stop the spread of a more monstrous, zombie breed of vampire that threatens both humans and court vampires alike.

This book is actually difficult to talk about because I love it so much. If anything tops this as my favorite book of the year, I will be shocked.
Here’s a random list of stuff I loved bc I can’t explain it any other way:

  • Magical Military: a niche favorite trope of mine. The order of vampire hunters that Remy belongs to, the Reapers, are also entrenched with political drama and secrets, plus lots of R&D science stuff which I love in a fantasy setting.
  • Remy’s entire backstory, how he both 1) doesn’t know he was abused but also 2) how that abuse coloring all his expectations of how relationships are supposed to work and actively impacting his attempts to form new ones.
  • WE LOVE A THROUPLE!! Remy, being impulsive and full of pent up rage but also being sooo emotionally damaged, Xiaodan having a “kill it with kindness” attitude as well as being a bad bitch, and Zidan, being the Type A intellectual asshole with a heart of gold and troubled past…all flawless. Things about each member's past gets revealed so well and aids in building up the organic relationship between them. Also, for a book that has surprisingly little smut, the sexual tension is also insane and had me ready to gnaw off my own arm at the slowburn of it all.

I cannot stress enough how Castlevania this feels; there’s even an inclusion of “a horrible night to have a curse” that I could recognize as a non-fan. This book is for all the gays who wanted the Castlevania anime to have a canon throuple. I am waiting very impatiently for next year when the sequel comes out so I can see my babies again…

This is not a perfect book by any means — the first third is a bit slow, a few words are misused, some of the twists were predictable and easy to guess, the ending was a little weak and rushed — but it was the perfect book for *me* and my reading mood when I picked it up. Violent, sexy, and a whole lot of fun, it felt like the perfect blend of fantasy and romance with both horror and historical elements. The take on vampires is refreshing without straying too far from tradition, and there's enough mystery, political intrigue, and suitably creepy monsters to keep things interesting. Remy could be a frustratingly oblivious protagonist at times, but he's such a dramatic disaster bi. I really loved reading the dynamics of this bisexual throuple; the romance is surprisingly soft and warm (maybe a bit instalove-y, but I don't even care).

I am in DIRE need of the sequel though after that ending!! Also I wish we had the US cover in the UK, it's so much prettier.

I knew I'd love this when I heard it described as "Castlevania, but they all kiss" and oh goodness they did a lot more than kiss.
There was a bit too much "there is no way they both like me" when the hot vampires were literally throwing themselves at him ... But there were enough reasons for Remy as a character to feel that way so it at least made sense.
SpoilerI thought their sex-filled Fortnite at Xiaodan's place
came a bit late in the plot because instead of enjoying their happiness I just kept thinking, aren't there more important things to be doing right now? Like a prude! I just think the pacing would be better if it happened in the first 40% and not the last 40% of he book.
The characters didn't have the most annoying features of their Castlevania doppelgangers (alcoholism & not kissing each other), but the characters were so similar in every other way that it was hard to think of these stories separately. I kinda wish Zidan was more moody like Alucard, it felt like
Spoiler they made him more aggressive because he's a top lol

Anyway, this book is full of action and it was hard to put down. I finished the whole thing in a weekend! Id recommend it to anyone a fan of queer fantasy!
I'll definitely read the next one.

First off, I loved the premise of this book! I'm here for vampires, for intrigue, for monsters, and science, and for a juicy bisexual triad! To say nothing of my penchant for a brooding hero learning what it's like to be Liked and Valued as a person! I found the plot entertaining and the writing to be enjoyable.

However, this book took me ages to get through because I just didn't gel with the MC. I felt really good about him in the beginning -- he's been through a Lot, so it makes a lot of sense that he's deeply mistrustful. It makes a lot of sense that he doesn't know how to work in a team, that he doubts peoples intentions, that when a beautiful woman is sincere and kind to him that he latches onto her, and that he has a "one step forward, two steps back" kind of progression from time to time. He is, however, very stupid (bless him).

I got frustrated with him failing over and over to put two and two together, to the point where I wondered how he managed to survive for so long in such a precarious environment. He seemed so capable when he was introduced -- damaged, sure, but skilled at his craft. As the story went on, though, I felt like he got more and more out of his depth to the point where when he's able to hold his own in a fight it came as a surprise to me.

That's a matter of personal taste, though, and I'd still recommend it to anybody hankering for a vampire story.

What a series opener! I went in with no expectations but am now invested in how the rest of the plot will unfold. Though Remy is stubborn, it was quite the ride to witness as he let his walls down and accept hard truths that he had never even considered. This was well-written and though there was one twist that was unsurprising, I think that people who aren't familiar with the patterns of such a mystery would be shocked. The romance was delightful. The other characters were easy to root for--or to hate. The setup for a second book was perfect and promised even greater trouble for both Remy and the reader.
