there’s a lot that i love here—expansive worldbuilding, vampire and human courts, political intrigue, and well-developed characters! ❤️ i got hooked from the first ~75 pages.

i also really enjoyed the tension between the 3 main characters (we love polyamory here) but i will say, i can’t quite believe  how smitten they are with the MC. much of the initial attraction especially for Zidan happened off-page. their three-way relationship felt like it jumped from 15 to 200 real quick. i didn’t 100% mind this because i do like each character enough individually to support the relationship 😂

i will say though that the storytelling struggled to juggle the different plot lines—the Rot, Remy’s mother, romance, First Court revival, everyone’s backstories—and  it did feel very segmented especially when thing started coming to a head.

all in all, i did enjoy reading this and i’m excited to read the sequel!!

Really wanted to like this one but right from the beginning I just didn't vibe with it. I'm still not even exactly sure where this book was set there was so little description about the setting as a whole, just the naming of random villages. Didn't super love any of the characters either, unfortunately. The biggest reason I was intrigued by this book was because of the throuple between the main three and it was very underwhelming. Not that the book *needs* smut/sex, but the fade to black of every encounter was annoying and I don't think any of the three of them were developed enough to make sense as any sort of couples. Basically anything about Zidan was told to Remy by Xiaodan and anything about their relationship was told to the reader instead of shown. The plot was so clunky and barely made any sense, and there was way too much happening to try and sift through it all. There's the town hating him and these evil vampires but also the Rot and these weird creatures and the murder of his mom and his horrid father and on and on and on like pick some of those and do them well, but to cram all of them in and not do great job on any of them is annoying. Will not be continuing the series; by the end of this one I was just skimming.

I actually had no idea what I was getting into when I picked this one up, just needed a queer vampire book for one of my reading challenges for the year. And I've enjoyed some of Chupeco's YA fantasy, so I was interested in seeing her foray into the adult fantasy world. For the most part, I wasn't disappointed!

There is some excellent romantic chemistry between the three main characters, and I liked the detective/mystery energy that the rot investigation brought. I do think overall, the book is a little longer than it needs to be because it feels like it drags a bit at the end. There's a pretty good hook for the sequel, so I might actually pick that one up to see where the story goes next!

this is DRAGGING. I will potentially revisit when I am feeling less foggy but I could not get into this.
