i'm honestly having a hard time trying to figure out a review for this one, other than it is beautifully written and was such a fresh change from other stuff i've read recently. i can't really put my finger on exactly what makes it a change, but somehow every turn of the page felt like a breath of fresh air. i felt like i was discovering a new world alongside Mila and Lee, and i felt a kinship with the characters that i don't feel often enough. LaCour has the power to make solitude feel poetic yet frustrating - she does not shy away from the victimization it can create for us or the turmoil that can isolate people without them even realizing. Mila is on a journey to trust people again, and experiencing all of her thoughts is hypnotizing - her back-and-forths, her mistrust, her honesty, her lying, her secrets, her selfishness and her selflessness - it is what makes her so human. while we all have such different lives, Mila becomes an embodiment of these raw feelings that may make us feel ashamed or sad or angry, and she learns to confront them - to feel them. it is such a wonderful book with a wonderful lesson.
Moderate: Death, Misogyny, Toxic relationship, Grief, Abandonment, and Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Panic attacks/disorders and Blood

It felt a bit short and was over very quickly. There's a point where Mila wants to savor something and not rush things, and I wish that had been allowed to happen. Maybe the payoff would have been more substantial.
Graphic: Death, Misogyny, and Abandonment
Moderate: Child abuse, Domestic abuse, Toxic relationship, Grief, and Fire/Fire injury
Minor: Animal death, Blood, Car accident, and Alcohol
