Halsey’s poetry is wonderfully vivid and ugly. It doesn’t shy from horrible truths at all. This is also why I love them as a music artist, her words are powerful and spellbinding. It translates to the written word just as well.

The reason that it’s not 5 stars is that some of it felt unedited. Also, there was 1 line that was biphobic that kinda shocked me. I know Halsey is bi themself, but still, it felt unnecessary to what I felt the poem was trying to say; commenting on toxic masculinity and relationships with men within the patriarchy.

Despite note being an avid reader of poetry I really enjoyed this book. As a Halsey fan it added a lot of insight into her life and music and made me feel like I was getting a special preview. I enjoyed the words and I resonated with some of the poems. Some felt confusing and missed the mark but it was still interesting to read about such experiences. Some of my stand out poems were Wish You The Best, The Tourist, Onanism, Eight, The Painter, Antagonist, Fun Girl (I think my favourite) and A Story Like Mine (search her performing this at the womens march, I cry every time). I think this book would be great to return to as life goes on and see whether I read anything differently. I would recommend this for fans of Halsey and poetry lovers but please consider trigger warnings before reading as there are very dark themes discussed.

There's some nice poems here (I wouldn't expect anything less from a songwriter), and I liked that they were longer in form. A lot of popular poetry these days seems to be just short phrases or quotables, so I liked the change. I will say quite a few of these poems felt either too long or unfinished.

I didn’t know what to expect besides… poems but I really loved this collection and I adore Halsey even more. There were some intense moments but worth the read.

Most of the poetry in this book captures the complicated emotions she is trying to convey. The poems have intriguing structure and powerful wordplay.

Some of the poetry in this book needs some work. Some of the poems carry on longer than they need to, resulting in a less impactful feeling. Some are a bit too cliche. The worst ones in the book seem like a first draft, like she just jotted down some thoughts in her iphone’s notes app. Having said that, some of those poems are charming for that very reason. They’re raw.

I’m conflicted about what to rate this collection of poetry all together, because I really loved most of it, and really cringed at the rest.

I read this book because I am a fan of Halsey’s music. I would recommend this book to other Halsey fans, but in general I would not recommend this book to others.
