The Duke of Destiny series are 4 short novels each featuring a duke who was injured at the Battle of Salamanca in 1812 and upon returning home, had to adapt to changed lives. Each also addresses marriage between commoners and nobility.

The last of the quartet is my favorite. Lee is a younger son, basically ignored by his father until he leanrs about Lee's taking to the stage as an actor under a pseudonym. Outraged, his father sends him off to war as a common soldier, and for all intents and purposes, disinherites him. The injury here is to his throat, causing him to lose the ability to project his voice, and thus ending any hope for an acting career. After both his father and older brother die, Lee ascends to the dukedom only to find it financially devastated. His only option to continue to provide for those dependent on the dukedom for a living is to marry an heiress.

Enter Theodora, daughter of a wealthy merchant and not your typical girl on the Marriage Mart. Teddie is a statuesque read-head with an adventurous spirit, not some simpering miss. Lee and Teddie meet over a rose bush, fumbling their way through a rapid courtship and endless mishaps to a happily ever after that leaves a smile on your face.
