This book was so immensely disappointing. The recurring sexism (which wasn't performed only by the characters, something I would be okay with, but was embedded in the book by the way the only female character was talked about and described as. The fetishisation and objectification of Marina, an "exotic" Greek woman with the personality of Hermione Granger, the body of the little goddess figurines which appeared in the book and the author's comparison of her to literal animals was stunningly bad in a way I wasn't prepared to deal with.) is the reason my rating is so low. I actually liked the parts when it wasn't hellbent on making me view Marina as an object. I can only imagine the amount of research needed to write this book. I found the descriptions of places, especially the caves immersive and vivid and I wished the book would take place entirely in there. I would have adored a book more intensely focused on the actual mission, cutting out all the unessessary drama between characters, sex scenes, objectification and bitchy whining that took up so many pages. Let the poor thing breathe.
