I really really enjoyed this book! I picked it up cause I like romance but I honestly would have enjoyed it without the romance. This is a weird pull but Nolans dominance reminded me of 2023 Max Verstappen specifically when during the challengers the other players say that they don't even think about beating him cause no one can. Sweet romance, interesting plot, good character development, and I learned a little about chess. Lost a star because I don’t think this should be classified as YA. I would not give this book to anyone under 14. There is no graphic sex but sex is talked about quite a lot and there are some more adult themes. <There is also a third act breakup that felt silly and unnecessary> My inly other critique is that she does tend to use the same basic formula for all her books. But ya know if it works it works cause I (and plenty of other people) eat it up every time. That being said overall a lovely book!

I really didn’t like Mallory. Nolan, however, was lovely.

Another amazing romance from Ali Hazelwood, who has never steered me wrong! I never thought I’d be this invested in chess or a romance surrounding it … but Mallory and Nolan (amidst their rivals to lovers banter and deliciously intense chemistry) might have just given me a new appreciation of the game.

I really enjoyed the supporting cast of characters too, which brought an added layer of depth and emotion to Mallory and Nolan as we got to know their friends and family. Especially Mallory’s younger sister Darcy and Nolan’s best friends (Tanu and Emil) who I found entertaining.

If you’ve loved Ali’s other books then you’re certain to enjoy this, but just be aware it is a YA romance so don’t expect any spice. And as always, do check TWs beforehand.

I loved this book. Read it in 7 hours, didn't want to put it down. It felt very relatable. The main character experiences a lot of chaos and is forced to grow up fast, having a lot of responsibilities. It’s nice to watch her to something for herself and learn more about herself as the book progresses.
