This book had my heart pounding right from the start! It's a great thriller/horror book. The characters are compelling and interesting and I did not expect the twist of the killer.

My few issues lie with the main character's back story and with the ending. The ending, in my opinion, leaves a little to be desired. I wish there would have been an epilogue, as I would like to see how the characters and the town are coping a few months later, when all of this is behind them.

Overall, though, I do highly recommend this book. But be warned that there are graphic depictions of violence, death, and murder. Possibly some slight gore, depending on your own personal proclivities.

4 stars; audiobook

Things that were great:
- the setting in small town Nebraska, creepy corn fields, bad cell reception, all the goodies for a spooky story
- representation
- I couldn't guess the killer

Things that were a little "eh":
- a town of roughly 2000 and the students of the school were like "I didn't know *insert name here* very well..."
- same town had a Sonic????!!!
- it was really 50/50 focused on romance and murder mystery, sooo it was like a slasher romance lol sorta strange but I still loved it

I went into this book expecting it to be cheesy (most Scream like movies are) and it didn't disappoint on that front. I did enjoy the read and was eager to find out who the killer was/who was going to die. Plus Makani was an interesting character to follow.

The book was a little too romance heavy but I sort of expected that going in since Perkins has written only romance before this. I would have liked some more horror/action bits but it was still enjoyable.

The end scene sort of frustrated me. Their friend died and I saw no reason why besides shock factor. Theres one kid with a knife and he cuts up a lot of people before they finally stop him when theres so many people trying to. It shouldn't have been that hard to stop him. The corn pit (is that even a thing?) was a silly visual that I just kept laughing as I was reading.

I'm not fan of when the MC has a ~mysterious past~ and Makani is this in spades. What she did was sort of crazy and extreme and was meant to create suspicion that she could be in on it (Now that would have been a plot twist!) but I was pretty confident the whole time she was going to be the final girl.

This was a cool concept and I hope to see more of this genre in YA. But I wish it went a little further than it did.

If you’re looking for a mindless thriller this is for you. Very reminiscent of scream. A short, easy read that is entertaining enough you won’t want to put it down, but that definitely isn’t going to change your life. There are a lot of points where things feel really needlessly over dramatized, but that does add to the page turner aspect of this. Is the writing quality great? No. Does the story line have some issues? Yes. Is it still really entertaining if you’re a fan of slashers? Yes.
