A good one! Not quite as compelling as Ghost, but Patina is certainly a compelling young adult character who is looking out for herself and her family in a difficult world.

Second in a series.  Patina — Patty — and her younger sister live with her uncle and aunt because their mother is medically unable to care for them. Patty loves her family and feels like she should be able to take care of things.  She runs for her Mom and on the track, she gets to be her true self.

I liked this book more than I thought I would...the cover and the blurb are misleading and don’t cover what most of the story focuses on. It was a nice change of pace to have a mother figure with diabetes (in the book she’s lost her legs because of it and the main character is cared for by her aunt). Things that were distracting: Patty’s relationship to Momly and Uncle Tony. I couldn’t tell who was a blood relative or not—it seemed poorly described and I kept getting confused. I also am not a fan of a male author writing a female protagonist. It’s noticeable and falls flat at different parts in the story. I would, however, recommend this to my students, bc I don’t think they would notice those issues.

I could not love this series more. Patina's race is the 4x800, which was also mine, and Reynolds does a phenomenal job writing it. At that moment when the baton dropped I actually groaned out loud right with the characters. And the running isn't even the best part. Patty's story is, I think, more well developed than Ghost's. A lot of kids will see themselves here. I'm pretty sure Jason Reynolds is making a whole generation of kids realize they love literature. Can't wait for Sunny.
