A sweet book for fall. Makes you want to eat apple pie. The illustrations are reminiscent of Wanda Gag and Virginia Lee Burton. A new classic.

The Apple Pie That Papa Baked makes use of repetition to illustrate how everything on the farm ultimately affects the families apple crop. Unlike other repetitive poems/ picture books, I was not annoyed at repetition by third read aloud.

With a limited color palette (cream, mustard yellow, black, & red) for the illustrations, this is a cumulative story (think The House That Jack Built) about a father picking apples (and the tree he picked them from and the world that grew the tree) and making a pie for his daughter. Very rhythmic and lyrical, it's not terribly exciting, but if you have kids that like to repetition you could get them involved with "the pie that papa baked" and have some fun conversations about the animals in the book and how they participate in the story. A decent but not outstanding read aloud for a group.

While I was reading this book, I kept thinking that this would make a GREAT flannelboard for story time. Anyways, it is a take on The House That Jack Built. What makes the book neat are the illustrations. Using 4 colors (black, tan, cream, and red) throughout the book added something special. Definitely near the top of my list so far.

Beautiful art; detailed and great use of just a few bland shades that make the book appear charmingly old fashioned.

I didn't appreciate the lude dedication in the begining, though.

"For Robert, who loves pie."

I bet he does.

Great pictures, we went through and told the story based on the pictures, after reading text. Text is in the fashion of the house that jack built.

This poetic story of a girl who follows her papa through the farm while he gathers the ingredients for apple pie, builds with each spread, digging deeper into the natural phenomena that allow the creation of an apple pie. A muted color palette, whimsical illustrations and a repetitive lines make this story best for bedtime, but enjoyable all the same.

I was not very impressed with this book, and usually I can handle repetition, but I just could not do this one. Even the kids got a little bored with it towards the end.

Picture Book. This book is a lot like The Napping House, in that it's got great repetition. I would use this book to teach about adjectives- every noun that the author uses has 2 awesome adjectives to describe it. The illustrations are touching as well- and sometimes 2 whole pages are nothing but pictures. It's a MUST have for my future library!
