A sweet story about an unusual friendship. Readers didn’t quite get how the great rescue happens — why does going in a circle get the calf out of the mud?

Otis, the tractor, loves his life on the farm. He diligently works the field all day, then relaxes at night chasing rabbits, playing with the ducks, or just sitting under the apple tree. Life become even sweeter when the calf moves in and he has a friend to share in the fun. Then, big yellow tractor moves in, and Otis is left in the weeds. Life isn't great any more for Otis, and not even calf can get him to play. Then calf gets in trouble and no one but Otis can save him, but will Otis leave the weeds to save the day?

A great tale about friendship and life changes. Students from rural areas will appreciate the farm-life aspect, but all students can relate to the story of friendship.

Very retro looking(Long says he was influenced by Virginia Burton and Robert Lawson) book. You can't not like this little tractor!

One of those books where text and illustrations work well together to make a book simply beautiful. Otis and a young calf become friends. When Otis is retired so that a bigger, better model can come in, the farm is not quite the same. And then one day, only Otis can save the day.

Much like the gentle stories of Virginia Lee Burton.

Oh, I want to love Otis. The illustrations are the most super gorgeous and Otis and his little calf are too cute, but it's just kind of boring. That might be a little harsher than I mean, but there's too much text for not enough plot. And frankly, that "puff puff puttedy-chuff" business was just hard to read. It might work better in a single child bedtime story situation, but unfortunately for storytime, it just fell a bit flat.

The book was given to us because my son's middle name is Otis.

We love the story. I love how Loren Long was inspired by Mike Mulligan and The Little House's author Virginia Lee Burton. I remember loving The Little House.

I thought I'd start keeping track of the books Forrest and I have read and enjoyed together. This one is darling--sweet pictures and a cute story. We both loved it (although we sat there staring at the cover trying to figure out what on earth Otis was for a solid couple of minutes before we started reading and--ohhhhh, tractor. Got it.).
