This book was genuinely awful. The writing is horrid, the characters are insufferable, and I don’t even think there’s a plot? There’s supposed to be a conflict between the main two characters, but they really don’t seem like they like each other. At all. Their problems don’t feel resolved.

I also don’t agree with the author’s views and wasn’t aware of them until I finished the book. I regret reading this book for so many reasons. I wish I could give it an even lower rating.

A beautifully written book with characters that feel entirely fleshed out and grounded. It manages to be a love letter to the art of video games, and the healing powers of play, while not shying away from the systemic flaws in both the gaming industry and the community. 
Sam and Sadie are incredibly well-written. Both their own stories, and their relationship to each other are told woven and layered together in an incredibly unique way that was so entertaining to read. They’re deeply flawed, complex, often unlikeable (but I was always able to empathize with them both) and beautifully human characters. Gabrielle Zevin nailed this.

The writing style by Zevin is gripping. Watching the story of two friends live and work together over decades and the realistic ways their relationship changes was masterful. There was quite a lot of triggering content but it was all handled delicately. I was so invested in the lives of these characters they felt so real to me as a reader.

I had heard great things about this book, which I expected to be in the ilk of Normal People. I didn’t feel any connection to the characters, though not unlikeable. This was an ok read during my commute but I was almost left disappointed by the book. I potentially had high/incorrect expectations but just didn’t love this book like I wanted to.
