Since this is my first danmei, I wasn't really sure what to expect but after finishing volume 1, I can proudly say that I loved it and it definitely exceeded and blew away my expectations. It's well-written and very fun to read. I was going through so many emotions while reading it. In addition, the illustrations inside were all gorgeous. The ending to this volume also gutted me. I was ripping my hair out and all.

I am slowly introducing myself to Danmei, and this is the third series I’m trying out. After finishing the first volume, this is my favorite series so far!

I enjoyed the darker, more mature story and the complex back and forth feelings Mo Ran feels for Chu Wanning as he is simultaneously recalling his past and present feelings.
I also wasn’t expecting to read about the way Chu Wanning feels and was quite surprised.

The only reason I’m knocking half a star off is that the beginning was a bit rough to get through. The first mission that Mo Ran had to go on with since being reborn dragged on for way too long. By the time that part wrapped up, it was almost halfway through the book! It was cool to see the world building, but a more interesting mission would have worked better to keep the pacing of the story.

Fortunately, the story picks up from there and I couldn’t put the book down! I loved the world building and supernatural concepts introduced. The interactions between all the characters were satisfying. There is great pacing between tense and emotional moments with smaller, brief moments to breathe.
But this story tugs at the heart strings for the suffering both Mo Ran and Chu Wanning put themselves through due to misunderstandings.

Seeing how things in Mo Ran’s life are unfolding way differently than his previous life leaves me curious to see how it’s going to play out. But my bigger question is: why was he granted to go back in time and will that greatly affect things in a positive or negative way?

Overall Rating: 4.5/5

Couldn’t get behind Mo Ran as a character and I’m not a fan of
Chu Wanning having feelings for him that young.
I just don’t think this book is for me and that’s ok.

I found the translations too poor, and the content too unsuitable. It was very very triggering, which made the jokes come off wrong.

First off, I liked this a lot more than I thought I would based on how people describe the story. Mo Ran is truly an idiot! He annoys and endears me in equal measure. Xue Meng is a fun combative element to Mo Ran's character. Shi Mei? I would trust to pass me a cup of water. Now best for last, Chu Wanning is infuriating and lovable to the highest extent lol.

For the actual writing, I found it to be funny, compelling, and easy to follow. The plot doesn't seem to drag (although there are 10 more volumes so we'll see and l was kept engaged the entire time.
Overall I'm looking forward to vol. 2!
