I disliked this play at times, and at other scenes I appreciated it. I listened to an audio format while I read to get the tone and emotion of the characters. I liked the importance of the moon and there was some pretty language in the form of similes and other descriptions. There were certainly some comical moments, like when the young Syrian captain slays himself because of how insane Salome is when she is overcome with a strange love for John the Baptist. The Syrian loved her, and to see her act this way would certainly be startling, but the scene happened in both a sad a funny way. Salome is mad due to love, while Herod is mad due to fear. Herod sees all the ill omens that are present and feels the angel of death, while his wife dismisses it all and calls him mad, which he is but he also sees some truth through his fear. The play is really weird and sometimes the description is a bit too long, but it was still interesting so I did not completely dislike it and I did enjoy certain scenes. I didn't completely expect the ending but it seems right.

...the mystery of love is greater than the mystery of death.
I bow to the greatness of Oscar Wilde. This was the strangest work of his that I have read and trust me I've read almost everything that this man has written. It lacked the distinguishable witty, sarcastic style of his and most importantly his quotes, but that didn't make it any less interesting.
Salome is a play based on biblical figures and many symbols can be found here. It's short and clever. I repeat this isn't the typical Oscar Wilde that we are familiar with, but still it's worth reading.

The first play I've ever read by Oscar Wilde. And it was a wild(e) ride. It might not be everyone's cup of tea but I fully enjoyed just how unhinged Salome was and Herodias, her mother and the entire play was just a fun romp with social commentary sprinkled in between, a perfect balance.
