Magic Breaks brings a lot of loose ends together, while also opening up a few new cans of worms. Fast-paced and action-filled, but also having that special bond Kate has with the characters she cares for, it was an amazing read.

Magic Breaks
4 Stars

After a long hiatus from the Kate Daniels series, it was easy to become reimmersed in the fantastic post-apocalyptic world that the Andrews writing duo has created.

While Magic Breaks is entertaining overall and there are some compelling twists and turns interspersed throughout, the overall effect of the book is disappointing for a number of reasons.

***SPOILERS***

First, Curran is absent for at least half of the book. While Kate can definitely hold her own, their partnership is one of the best aspects of the series. This is reinforced in the second half when he returns and the characters work together to overcome any obstacles.

Second, the Hugh D'Ambray storyline lacks cohesion with many of his actions taking on an air of desperation and obsession that is inconsistent with his previous characterization as a shrewd manipulator. Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see in which direction his character develops.

Finally, the showdown between Kate and Roland is anti-climactic with the most powerful being in the Kate Daniels universe presented as a mix of petulant child and overindulgent parent.

Despite these issues, there are some intense action-packed moments and exciting developments whose consequences remain to be seen.

I was not overly excited about the lack of Curran in half of this book. There was tons of excitement otherwise though.

I was expecting more fireworks for the ending. Instead it read as if it's the end, but the authors did say it would not be. So we will see.

OMG This book was exhausting. Kate´s books are always fast-paced but this was next-level with all the running around escaping life-or-death situation after situation. To be honest I don´t even remember what happens that well because I was just so anxious to see if everyone was going to make it alive that I pushed through it like my life was depending on it. I loved everything until they solve the murder and meet the People to reach a peaceful solution, but after that it got a bit repetitive and at some point I was just hoping that it would end if only so Kate could finally catch a break.
SpoilerAnd we finally we meet Roland!!! which was brilliant, with Kate finally mastering blood magic and claiming Atlanta and being her awesome self, but it also felt a bit underwhelming? for seven books we´ve been preparing for war, and now all he wants is to get to know Kate better? and to leave her alone he only asks that she steps down as Consort of the pack? and leaves cookies for her? I don´t know, I have three books left in the series so maybe I´ll get my battle then but for know this outcome was, if not disappointing, at least definitely underwhelming.
