Blocking out parts of my synopsis because I feel like it gives away plot points learned in the first book, Anatomy: A Love Story.
Hazel Sinnett, still haunted by the events of the previous year—
immortality, Beecham’s vial, and her uncertain connection with Jack—feels isolated and unsure if any of it was real
. Alone at Hawthornden Castle, she focuses on treating patients while the castle decays around her, until she’s arrested for saving a life. Her fate seems sealed until she’s unexpectedly summoned to serve as the personal physician to Princess Charlotte, the sickly daughter of King George IV. Thrust into the opulence and intrigue of the royal court, Hazel becomes entangled with a secretive group known as the Companions to the Death,
uncovering dangerous forces within the monarchy
. As her role at court deepens, Hazel realizes that not only her future as a surgeon, but also the stability of the crown itself, may rest in her hands.

This might be the first duology I've read, and if they're all done as artfully as this one, I need more. Schwartz wraps up our characters' stories so beautifully, I feel like I'm not left with a billion questions/wanting more detail. I was getting vibes of Netflix's 'Queen Charlotte', which just added to my enjoyment, since I adored that show. You can't help but root for Hazel, she's such a likable and strong willed female character. I thought her personality and dreams were created so tastefully.

Immortality: A Love Story
⤷ ⭑⭑⭑.𝟮𝟱

₊˚⊹⋆ I just finished reading the second book right after the first one, and I have a lot of thoughts about it. The story started off really strong, and I was genuinely excited about its direction. However, things took a downturn around the middle of the book.

Here are some spoilers - I had expected the story to focus on Hazel's grief and loss, her journey of moving forward from the events in Edinburgh, and the loss of Jack. When Simon, the King's royal physician, was introduced to help Hazel with her new responsibility of becoming the princess' physician… I loved him immediately!! They had so much chemistry, which I didn't feel with Jack in the first book. But when we got to the ball scene, you'll know the scene I'm talking about if you've read it; I had a bad feeling about how the story was going to go...

The plot took one step forward and three steps back.

I felt very frustrated with some of the events that transpired since then. The highly exclusive secret society was interesting, but it didn't quite live up to its potential. That villain arc, in the end, felt anti-climatic! It was disappointing, especially because there was so much potential in the topics the book touched on, such as the stigmas and prejudices against women's education and their desire to pursue professional degrees instead of being accessories to successful men.

What a shame. But then again, these thoughts are my own and I encourage you to read the sequel if you are still curious about Hazel's journey after the first book. Now Dana Schwartz, let's consider a book about Dr. Simon Ferris ;)

✧ post-read: hmm it took me almost a month to get this done.. i’m having mixed feelings about that ending though..

✧ pre-read: i gotta know what happens next!! alsooo look at THE COVER. WOW.

This book was so much fun to listen to I inhaled it in a week and could easily have kept reading. If you need something light and fluffy, I highly recommend this one.

The ending was a bit anti-climactic. I thought Hazel would have a more dramatic exit from the Companions of the Death. None of the other members came after her, except Anne-Marie. Plus Anne-Marie’s meddling in the king’s illness did not surprise me. Also, I thought we’d get more crimes from their group. Like embezzlement of royal funds or poisonings. I did like the bit about Anne-Marie ending up a floating head after Jack hacked her apart. I appreciated that the queen and her lady’s maid were in love and Hazel’s respect for them. Her willingness to help and conspire to make their dreams come true made me happy. I also liked that finale when Beecham appeared as his own solicitor.

Moreover, I liked Hazel’s personal development, her growing confidence as a physician, her love and loyalty to Jack even when the temptation of another man came around, and her determination to help others.
