Uneven (-) but unpredictable (+) and a fun selection of stories.

This is hard to review since it's a collection. Some of the stories were better than others, as with most collections. Burning Chrome (the collection's namesake) was by far the best story in there. I love Gibson's way of writing about technology, and how he talks about fictional technologies like you already know what he's talking about. Enjoyable, but I'd recommend Neuromancer over this collection.

I am going thru a Gibson withdrawal and hadn't read this so I bought it. I don't like short stories - well, because they are short. But what can I do?

Reading the last story (Burning Chrome) I wondered if Google named the browser after this story.

Some superb stories and some that really didn't click with me. When I was able to connect, the fast pace writing style was very engaging and a joy to read. However, when the plot didn't interest me, it could be a bit of a slug. Luckily, Gibson has a vast array of interesting ideas to set his plots around. Along with the general mood, these were such a joy to read.

Rounded down from 4.5 stars

Fantastic collection of (mostly) cyberpunk from one of the masters of the genre. You can really see Gibson developing a lot of the foundations of the genre here in a variety of different stories. Individual story ratings below.

Johnny Mnemonic: 4/5

The Gernsback Continuum: 2/5

Fragments of a Hologram Rose: 3.5/5

The Belonging Kind: 3/5

Hinterlands: 5/5

Red Star, Winter Orbit: 5/5

New Rose Hotel: 4/5

The Winter Market: 4/5

Dogfight: 5/5

Burning Chrome: 4.5/5

It's always hard to judge a short story collection. I really liked some for either having great story telling ("Dogfights"), or making you think ("The Hinterlands"). Others I didn't enjoy as much for coming off as too abstract or 'artsy' ("Dreams of a Holographic Rose"). Overall, it is a good example of Gibson's work, but as with any collection of short stories, don't expect yourself to love every one in the book.
