I haven't read Asterix since I was a teenager, and my memory may be foggy, but this just didn't seem to hold up to the quality of the old books.

A good laugh, boosted by the nostalgia from reading tonnes of asterix as a child.

The story is simple, not particularly interesting or memorable, but the humour and art hold up. This is a (relatively) recent addition to the series with a new author who has delivered on the tone and humour to make them seem just like how I remember from childhood, which for the most part is a good thing but as per the asterix formula, its full of jokes based on stereotypes (in this case about scottish people) which can feel a bit dated and unoriginal.

First up, I have the Scotts version so the story is slightly hampered by the language barrier. Having said that, reading this in Scotts with the Gauls in Caledonia gave it an authentic feel - even if the depiction of the Picts isn't historically accurate (but then when has the Asterix books worried about that?). A lot of fun.

These books are full of bright, fun and delightful characters who go on various adventures and get to beat up a bunch of Roman soldiers. Accompanying the story and the characters is a plethora of clever puns and word play that the translators should get a medal for. There are always a few gags or phrases in Latin that may mean nothing to the non-Latin speakers (such as myself) but Google can lend a helping hand there.
