Funny and pretty lighthearted given heavy focus on death and lost gods.

If you have some experience with Discworld or other works of Terry Pratchett, this book would certainly make more sense to you than it did to me. It was still a fun winter holiday read, but there was a lot of hand-waving about how the magic and magical creatures in this world work. I wouldn't have wanted the book any longer than it was, but I got lost in some of the attempted (and abbreviated) explanations of various powers and magical circumstances, so I had to do a lot of accepting and moving on. It would have been better for me to have fewer threads and more clarity on what was happening in each thread.

Terry Pratchett is an author unlike anything I have ever read. He writes in a way that is so unique yet so characteristically himself that I can't help but be enchanted by it.
However his style is also obscure in many ways, thereby making it hard for me to understand what's going on.
So most of the time I was just along with the ride, having a general idea, what's going on, but not exactly why something is happening. This happened with many other Terry Pratchett books as well, but since I haven't read anything about it from anyone else, it must be a me problem.

Anyway, I still liked the book (what I got from it, at least).

I’ve read and reread the Discworld books over the years and found that sometimes I’m in the mood, sometimes not. However, this is a constant joy to read and the ideas behind it stick with me. It’s really a poweful conclusion.

I will say that it is a bit of a rambling book and in that sense, the film is actually better than the book (a rarity, I know) because the film is tighter in plot and characters. But the book is really really great!

To think it took me this long to read Pratchett... I'm ashamed of myself.

My favourite—or close second favourite— Discworld novel, I read it every Christmas, and I have to finish it before Chrismas Day. The Death of Rats and Quoth are an ace comedy team in this. Susan is very powerful and... Just amazing in this book. Twyler and Gawain are very well written (it's not very often you see an author get "child's speech" right!). Death/Hogfather is very good and so is Albert/Pixie!

If it was by any other author, it would've been an hilarious and awesome book. But it's a Pratchett novel, and so I was disappointed; perhaps because I read it after Good Omens. It was good, but I usually find that I can't put down Pratchett novels, and Hogfather just wasn't a page turner for me. I think it may have been due to the secondary characters and how little I connected with them. My least favourite Pratchett so far.
