When I saw this at the library I had to get it and I’m so glad I read it after years of having it on my reading radar. I knew it was about a cult but was shocked when the details were familiar and I realized it mirrored the Manson Family cult. I was so intrigued by the perspective and love when typically male centered stories are retold centering the female POV. I found Evie’s character sooo interesting and loved the way Cline illustrated the way induction into cults or cult like communities is so easy yet complex at the same time. I wonder how everyone else feels but I felt like Suzanne was protecting Evie the whole time. I think it is stated that, that would be the easy way to think of it but I still think in some regard it’s true. Overall, the novel was enthralling, intrigued and wildly unique. I also borrow Daddy from the library so I’m very keen to read that over the coming weeks too.

Bored teenager thinks she is special and does profound things, but she doesn’t. Overhyped book, pretty boring read! Some nice prose though!

3.75 but I’ll round up for the sake of the writing.

This was a trip but the writing style was easy to read and filled with quotable lines and insights that made me think of my girlhood.

Not quite sure what to take away from this book but it was a good filler to read in between fantasy books and got me pretty spooked at times.

Just didn’t live up to the hype or my personal expectations at all. I felt that the present day Evie and the narrative surrounding Sasha and Julian was very irrelevant and a lots of unnecessary content just to give the comparison between younger Evie and Sasha.
The book would have been more engaging had the focus been on the cult and the facts surrounding it.
However, the gruesome men were portrayed well and Evie’s relationship with Susanne was intriguing.
