A beautiful, heartbeaking story of Roxanne Gay's relationship with herself and her body. Gay explores her painful, often contridictory attitudes toward her body and how she is able to, or oftentimes UNable to, move through the world as a fat, Black, queer woman. I'm huge fan of Aubrey Gordon's work and she shouted out this book specifically, and it was disheartening to learn how much of Gay and Gordon's lives as fat women are the same and how the world tries to exclude them or shame them.

This was a tough book to get through. I almost cried several times, and i’m not a very emotional person. This book deserves no less than 5 stars because of how perfectly it depicted her story and how necessary it was to be told. It’s brave for anyone to tell their story, because it’s terrifying. (I don’t need to elaborate, read the book) But it gives other women hope. It honestly changed my whole perspective. I’ve always been on her side with these sorts of things but she made me not only realize WHY i fight for these things but also made me passionate about them. As someone with a BMI under 30 i never really understood fat phobia to a great extent. Maybe I never will. But she really helped me get closer and i think any book that does that is a good one. Highly recommend.

I read this book at a time where I was grappling with my own body and figuring out how I felt about it. So the whole experience was a bit more emotional and heady than I was prepared for. I cried around 40 pages in because Gay writes in a way that tears at your heart and makes you sympathize but also connect on a visceral level.

I started journaling foe the first time in years as I read this book, it affected me that much. Trigger warnings are needed for this one. This is not an easy read for those who've experienced sexual violence, self harm, eating disorders, or body dysmorphia.

What a fantastic book.  The author's reflections on her own body and life are personal, yet so many of the thoughts could be what any of us think.  While I'm not a huge fan of personal essays or memoirs, this one touched me.

One thing I will always appreciate about Roxane Gay is how honest she is. She doesn't try to shy away from the truth or sugarcoat things to protect your feelings. I love her and how she challenges me and how much I always learn when I read her books <3 (she's also a fellow swimmer. slay.)
