I quite enjoyed this book, but felt it was overlong. I am that a little pruning would have assisted the pacing of the read. However, having said that I enjoyed the storyline and the twists and turns and will pick up another of his books in due course.

Audio book. I really loved the main character, the story, and the setting. I also enjoyed the narrator, which made it even better.

I had previously read the Natchez Burning trilogy and really enjoyed it and it was great to now go back to the first Penn Cage story. Being from Louisiana and familiar with Natchez increased my enjoyment of this book. A great story written by a great writer. Iles books move along quickly despite the length of the books. I highly recommend this book!

Decent read....murder/court drama. I enjoyed it but wasn't wowed. Moved a little slowly at times.

This is the first novel I’ve read by Greg Iles and I’m on the fence about it. I don’t know if it needed to as long as it was, the language was true to life but still a bit hard to read and Penny’s thinking on some things are a reflection of a certain period in time that I had to remind myself is NOT 2022. So setting aside those things, I was able to enjoy the book despite length and I can’t firmly it wasn’t terrible. I’m on the fence if I’ll continue this series but it wasn’t a waste of time.

3.5 stars. Very slow in the beginning, needed to be 100 pages shorter. Once it got going it was pretty good, and ending tied up very quickly with a surprise last minute witness.

Penn is recently widowed and struggling with grief and caring for his small child. So he impulsively decides to move home to Mississippi, where he immediately jumps head-first into solving a 30-year-old murder. The child is dumped with Grandma while Penn races around solving crime and finding a girlfriend.

The story was good, but I didn't care for the way the beginning was set up.
