I have such mixed feelings about the book. First off it took me at least 100 pages to get into the book. I did however like the contrast between the chapters written from the point of view of Barry and then the prose like chapters written from the point of view of Carmel.

There are some really good suspenseful moments in the book but I got distracted by the slow pace after these moments. <spoiler The return of Carmel from Antigua felt like such an anticlimax to me. It had been building up to that moment and then the scene itself was so short and so undramatic that it frustrated me .

The pacing spread of the book was the main issue for me, but the topic and subject matter was interesting.

Mixed feelings. The writing itself is brilliant, Evatisto has a talent for comedy. However, our main character hates women and it shows. It was frustrating to read and hard to like him with such outdated, nasty views of the women in his life. The last hundred pages saved the book for me. At least at that point Barry
starts to understand he's in the wrong and Carmel gets her life back
. My rating is mostly for the quality of writing, not for the main character who I think we're supposed to like.

I'm really not sure how I feel about this book. On one hand, the writing is gripping, engaging and beautiful. On the other hand, the characters are quite unlikeable, almost to the point I stopped reading.

One thing for sure is these characters are complex and their actions and thoughts are incredibly relatable.

The downsides of the book is that it's filled with a lot of phobic language (which I understand why), unlikeable characters and the ending could have been a bit longer. The ending felt a bit rushed and cliche as the characters did not reflect on their own flaws and still had
happy endings, except maybe Barry
.

I really liked this book but tbh I think its quite fucked that the only bigoted view expressed in this book that isn't questioned/critisized by the narrative/other characters is transphobia
