While I didn't enjoy this one as much as The Masked City, I do think this book cemented my desire to read this whole series. I would never argue this is excellent and flawless literature, but there is something compelling about it, and the ideas and plot lines are so much fun. I can picture the worlds vividly, and I love exploring and playing in them. One of my favourite aspects is seeing how Irene uses the Language but also how she doesn't, and why sometimes it's not the right choice.

I like Kai less and less as the books go. He's like a petulant child and I really hope Irene doesn't end up with him! Irene herself is growing on me, and her sort of business-like attitude is often endearing. Although I do wonder why she has to lowkey be in love with every single character. Any individual who she's met so far could be a potential relationship. It's a little ridiculous. We get it, Irene, you think everyone is hot. Vale as always is my baby boy and I would do anything for him.

The werewolves were GREAT in this and I am excited for them to come back and be a bigger part (fingers crossed!). What's-his-name the leader was so good so good.

On to spoilers...
How DARE they kill Zayanna?? How DARE they??? Genevieve I've got some words for you about that. I actually refuse to believe she's dead like I will be in denial about that until the end of the series comes and I'm proven wrong. Irene and Zayanna are end game and I won't hear anything else from anyone.

Although my second choice would be Vale. So it was nice to see some of that. Even if it was classic Invisible Library weirdness with coming out of nowhere and never really being brought up again except in passing.

Also dude I'm still convinced there is something sinister about the Library. Like I can't accept it's just a fully benevolent organisation.

Also can we defeat Alberich for good already? We need to move on to new villains.

YES!

So, I'm totally into this series now. I absolutely adored this.

The world is pretty much built by this time -- the basis of it, but in each new "world" they go into has to be explained as well and I think the author does a good job of that. I also like how there is an over-arching bad guy who isn't brought up in every single book. It gives the books flavor, you know?

Irene can keep a calm head in huge storms and she always tries to do what she thinks is right. She is an extremely strong heroine and I love her. The side characters are also so fun and full of life.

Moving on to the next book, immediately.
